The system was clearly DESIGNED to "lose" kids and I will be very (happily) surprised if the recently confirmed death is the only one.https://twitter.com/haleshannon/status/1025030197278646273 …

Today I went for an MRI. I was at the hospital for only 1 hour, but they still put this wristband on me with my name and info. There is ZERO excuse for not only taking kids from their parents but then losing track of who they are and where they belong. pic.twitter.com/Tn9IJMyylu

I'm reminded of Occam and Hanlon here... Hanlon's razor. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. Occam's Razor: The simplest solution tends to be the right one. These people are idiots first, evil second?

I shave with Occam's razor all the time, but Hanlon's is new to me. I do struggle with drawing lines between intentional and emergent behavior (which is how I often frame it).

But it seems like it might be easy to use Hanlon to to deflect a hard look at inherently discriminatory power structures. I think as with the storied nature/nurture debate, I have to stand in the "it's complicated!" camp in most cases.

It could be argued that evil is a form of idiocy...

I've always thought of evil having explicit intent, while idiocy is an unfortunate circumstance, but the prevalence of willful ignorance is making me think that evil may be an unforeseen outcome of intentional idiocy...
