I like @DaveHogue's framing of "high data density experiences." I usually say VUIs don't do well with complex inputs/outputs, but--while that's clear & concise--it's oversimplistic. This is better, but I fear "high data density experiences" is too abstracted for most ppl...https://twitter.com/DaveHogue/status/1017444258570104832 …

I have a great example of a complex input that is easy to do by VUI, harder to do simply by GUI (it IS possible, just not as simply), but for which the output is better in a GUI than a VUI. That's the paradox of multi-modal UIs: they are not uniformly bi-directional. :)

Here it is: Boolean search & filtering is easy by VUI, damn complicated by GUI. "What are prices of morning flights from SF to Las Vegas on Thursday or Friday and returning in the evening on Sunday or Monday?" Flexible date range selection, specifying time, etc. = MESSY GUI.

Completely agree. The challenge is that the best output of that Boolean search is context-dependent. I am *hungry* to do more research on multi-modal IxD.

Smart home devices with screens are the place to be, and it's poised to explode as voice assistants get added to TVs, remotes (a la xfinity), laptops (a la Cortana or Siri), and specialized devices for which the primary interaction is voice. :) Oh, and phones. ;)
