I like @DaveHogue's framing of "high data density experiences." I usually say VUIs don't do well with complex inputs/outputs, but--while that's clear & concise--it's oversimplistic. This is better, but I fear "high data density experiences" is too abstracted for most ppl...https://twitter.com/DaveHogue/status/1017444258570104832 …

Completely agree. The challenge is that the best output of that Boolean search is context-dependent. I am *hungry* to do more research on multi-modal IxD.

Smart home devices with screens are the place to be, and it's poised to explode as voice assistants get added to TVs, remotes (a la xfinity), laptops (a la Cortana or Siri), and specialized devices for which the primary interaction is voice. :) Oh, and phones. ;)

They like the complexity cause it gives them power, and they want the power. What’s difficult (and requires a shitload of good research and iteration) is to get *their* process into the interface, cause their process is also complex. If the interface mimics their process, gold.
-
We also worked with the air controllers of Maastrich and their processes and interfaces, and they wanted their interfaces to be complex. It was a bit pride on knowledge, but a lot it being good for their work that they reflected the complexity of the system they interfaced for.

Then when it comes to spreadsheets and data synthesizing, it is more like we need a change of paradigm. After all, no-one’s job is creating spreadsheets. Those are just meanings to other ends.
-
Then one would say: VUIs? And I’d say: Touché. Perhaps. We’ll see.

Then one would say: but what about the pro users that do know what they want and need the granularity? Those pro users can learn to use complex interfaces. Like train or airplane dashboards, or like the NSH research tools I used to design years ago. 1/

We just tend to put the heavy lifting on the user’s side, assuming it is giving them “control”, when most of the time is we don’t know what they really want. They don’t either, so we need good research to know. And usually they don’t want more control, only better answers.

Messy? Not necessarily. I can think of a simple GUI that can solve for similar scenarios: http://Google.com GUI are only a reflection of the system they interface to. If the system does most of the heavy lifting, then the GUI does not have to.
