I'm trying to make a very subtle distinction here. A dark pattern is a repeatable design solution with identifiable malicious intent. My concern is that we are discussing efforts to modify behavior (for good or bad) without consent and not acknowledging that is what we're doing.

OK - if you're saying you don't want to broaden the usage outside repeatable algorithms, I can get behind that. But the analogy is strong & it does deserve to be noted. Distinction is basically that this isn't an algorithm - but they share intent to modify behavior w/o consent.

Yes, the association / analogy with dark patterns is relevant. Yes, part of the the concern is about consent. And, part of the concern is about how we frame the problem, discussion, and solution. I had not included algorithmic and repeatable considerations.

We frame the problem, discussion, and solution in terms of technology and metrics, and we omit the experiential, behavioral, phenomenological facets. Simply put: we're not asking for permission to change people, and we're not telling them we're doing it.

Should've waited, see reply to prev.
