It de-personalizes people, and it places all of the emphasis on the business and product goals by removing nearly all consideration of the person's needs, goals, emotions, motivations. It centers the discussion on the metrics of the product, not the experiences of the people.

How can you be a design lead at google and use this as an example???? I’m confused as this is just a very weird example to illustrate your point.
-
I assume that Dave emphasised the importance of language to describe design as it has a big impact in a company. I believe that stakeholders might not perceive the word “hack” in the same way and potentially risking a negative perception of design.
-
Yes, my protest is about the terminology, not the example. Microsoft did some clever research and design on progress bars to alter the perception of time for indeterminate processes. It was not malicious - it was a minor adjustment of perception to reduce frustration. 1/2

My concern is that "hacking" puts machines before humans. It's also a slippery slope in ethics - small things for good might also be small things for bad, and framing these as technology discussions makes it easier to accept or overlook malice.

I understand your perspective and respect it. This is actually refreshing reading this :)

This is not a good example. You’re saying that good design is bad for people. The people making the apps don’t control your devices internet connection. They can’t actually make things go faster... so what you are asking for is a lot of white screens or spinning balls.
-
If you want good examples google the term “dark patterns” where psychology is being “hacked” for very bad reasons (to trick you into agreeing to stuff usually).
-
Thank you for citing examples of persuasive design and visual design and emotions - there are many innocuous examples of good design leveraging psychological principles.
