People also moaning that YouTube is taking away a useful/key feature. No. I bet about 1% of those complainers have EVER used YT's DM's. Just complaining at them for the sake of doing so. Video responses tho? The criticism was warranted regarding their removal. They were useful

Main things DM's were used for were ppl spamming something they made, "sub4sub" requests, trolling or early versions of networks recruiting. Rarely were they used for actual communication. Due to the above reasons those who DID know where to find messages tended to ignore em.

I think the only time I got a non-spam message there was from The Mail Online asking if they could use a video, which they did regardless!

Yeah another example of a useful tool withdrawn that prompted and encouraged interaction with your audience (depending on how it was used). Like video responses. Its like they wanted to remove many of the community driven interactivity methods haha.
