A consistent theme in the comments is the importance of the mentor & environment on staying in academia. Also consistently mentioned is how “hard” the road is. If the NIH is pouring $$$ into MD/PhD programs, shouldn’t we make the road easier to get ROI?

OMG THIS VIRUS IS CRAZY! It can cause between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually. I'm referring to influenza. And you thought I was going to say

“The mindset isn’t about seeking a result—it’s more about the process of getting to that result. It’s about the journey and the approach. It’s a way of life. I do think that it’s important, in all endeavors, to have that mentality.” -Kobe Bryant 🏀

I know the 80/20 split exists and is highly rewarding. The key was finding a career mentor who supported my goal of a K award as a fellow. It look a lot of grit but the journey has been rewarding. I do 6 wks inpt consult per yr and rest research - good luck!

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.

I spent $1.50 for a used copy of the book that inspired the movie “Apollo 13.” I open it to find the signature of astronaut Jim Lovell! 🌔

Your will not guarantee you a great career. But if you take ownership, learn all you can, and keep pushing to grow your skills, you'll have one that's greater than you've ever imagined. It's all you! You got this! 🤓

I'ma just drop this knowledge again. Any chance you have to give a talk, present a poster, do it. Last summer I gave my first talk and it's been the foundation for so many of my presentations. Back then I was like...why am I doing all this extra shi.. now I'm so glad that I did.

When I work with trainees, these responses garner respect: "I'll figure it out" "I'll take care of it" There is always a network of support and help, but initiative + reliability = important attributes in medical training and beyond.

The hardest part of a PhD and an academic job isn’t intelligence, grants, or research chops.. My mom hugged me yesterday and started to cry, “I wish you lived closer” I was visiting for Christmas. She had brain surgery two weeks ago.

In 2009, I had my first lab experience and fell in love with basic-science research! In 2019, I am finishing the last full year of my PhD!

When you put yourself out there... you may fail. You may be ridiculed. You may fall flat on your face. But excellence is not achieved by those who play it safe all the time. So here’s to those who are willing to risk it — to those who choose courage and accept vulnerability!
