My book, Civilization Critical, is now available. It takes a big-picture, long-term look at our global mega-civilization. It presents a new analysis of the root causes of our problems, and points the way to solutions. Click the link for ordering info.

A very interesting article by highlighting the sheer quantity of being produced worldwide! Figures like "a billion kilograms per day" and "20k soft drinks per second" scare us!

I've found the work of instructive here in terms of identifying the role of fossil fuels in growing both human and domesticated animal populations... ...as terrifying and as difficult the implications may be!

The fires in Australia are horrifying. How are we to understand them? One key fact is that Australia has built its economy on coal mining. Coal is the country's largest export.

Governments and agribusiness corporations have pushed farmers to adopt high-input, high-cost, high-energy-use, high-emission production systems. This is a huge error. Reducing farm input use is key to reducing emissions AND raising net farm incomes.

Are we seriously considering the possibility of almost triplicating our power flow by the end of 2100? Remember, this is energy. What do we use energy for? We use it to do work. This means extracting, transforming and moving a lot of stuff. We call it growth.

The farm income and climate crises are linked. When inputs increase, emissions go up and profits go down. Climate change is an opportunity to break grip of corporate input suppliers, reimagine and wholly restructure Canadian food systems -

Governments could have built a 100% zero-emission electricity system for Regina. Instead they built a high-emission highway. As I say in my book: “We’re not doomed. But we can choose doom.”

$1.88 billion: that’s the amount the governments of Canada, Saskatchewan, and Regina spent building the Regina bypass. There are 64,000 single-family detached homes in Regina. $1.8 billion divided by 64,000 is $29,000 per house—much more than the cost of a rooftop solar array.
