In the Bezos interview (Economic club DC) he defends his decision to buy the Post. He cites a desire to protect an important American institution. I’m inclined to believe him even given my typical skepticism of such claims, and general cynicism about most such purchases. Naivety?

I would bet that Bezos honestly believes he is "protecting an important American institution" with the WaPo purchase AND he honestly believes it's a smart play to defend his interests.
