Bill Maher dismisses Stan Lee, comic books and their relevance much the same way people dismissed Lenny Bruce and stand up comedy.

Many people are quick to assume that all comics and the entire medium is all in service to only superhero stories, not aware that comics is a limitless medium that gives voice to a wide variety of topics. Illustrated work doesn't make it juvenile.pic.twitter.com/AROdcB1N0q

To equate all comics as if they are the same, simply because they're a combination of words and illustrated images in a genre, is like saying there's no difference between Bill Hicks and Larry the Cable Guy, no difference between Bob Dylan and Justin Bieber,..

I disagree. I think escapism is built into our culture, and it has little to do with "growing up" as much as a need to escape a feeling of powerlessness and injustice. It's easy to dismiss one form of entertainment as "immature' just because it isn't one's personal favorite.

I think my only gripe is that this doesn’t translate to the comic shop sales. The characters have leapt off the pages and have everyone’s attention but only few are examining where they came from.

Those things aren't exactly related. If anything it's probably helping stores stay afloat, via the advertising it does for comics. Online merchants are killing brick and mortar stores, simple as that. You can get your stuff conveniently online, and so people do.
