      1. People who want to dismantle the U.S-led global security order are like anarchists: well-meaning but living in an artificial fantasy land

      2. Dismantling structure or withdrawing from interests abroad are both the easy part. But pretending peace will take its place is silly.

      3. Those who advocate for dismantling of NATO, withdrawal from Korea/Japan etc have to pretend there won't be any negative consequences. Sad

      4. To keep that up, you have to pretend that Russia and China aren't expansionist, or pretend it's in response to American aggression

      5. And that if only the US withdrew, then Russia and China would not seek to expand their own regional power/hegemony

    6. Dante Atkins ‏@DanteAtkins 6 Aug 2016

      6. Eastern Europe doesn't believe that. Korea and Japan certainly don't either. Without NATO/US, you have a new arms race, possibly nuclear.

7.At the very best, social democracies leftists uphold as models would be forced to drastically increase spending on arms/nuclear deterrence

      8. At worst, obviously, you get major armed conflicts, because global security paradigms rarely shift without massive global chaos

          10. Therefore, reforming how the US leads global security is a much better bet than pretending dissociation is okay and consequence-free

          11. I'm not a fan of imperialism but until I can come up with a structure that replaces the role of the US and does it better, this is it

          21 replies 9 retweets 17 likes
        3. Dante Atkins ‏@DanteAtkins 6 Aug 2016

          12. And seeing Intercept/Greens cozy up with an expansionist oligarch who used to lead the KGB just to oppose US imperialism? That's weird.

          13. Now, there are a lot of things we need to do differently. But the "enemy of my enemy" thing is bizarre/counterproductive.
