I've been a gamer since the early 80s and I'm at a loss to think of any prior to the 2000s that aren't a choice from a character creator or from a fighting game with many character choices including a token black guy. I know some exist, but dang is it hard to think of any.

Ghostbusters II for the NES or PC, both games start you off as Winston. Jake Stone from Solar Winds. Sorcerer from Diablo 1.

The best I have without going fighting games, sports games, or historical strategy, is Coach and Rochelle from L4D2. The fact that I had to think this hard and couldn't give an answer where a black character is sole protagonist (aside from recent games) is infuriating.

Wow couldn't think of one, so I looked up black characters in gaming and the only one I could come up with is Barret in FFVII and he isn't even a protagonist. I never played San Andreas...
