We have a postdoctoral position opening in my lab. The project will investigate protein misfolding and quality control mechanisms using proteomics and biochemistry-based approaches. Please see link below for details.

Very pleased to see our work come out today in PNAS. Led from the front by and involving many collaborators. Widespread remodeling of proteome solubility in response to different protein homeostasis stresses

Hear! hear! There are many pressures on academics in research. In my mind the intense competition for limited research grant dollars puts the blowtorch on us. This then fuels the incentives for unhealthy gaming of the system and disenchantment for especially younger researchers.

Our scientific community would be better served by removing the incentive to judge research based on journal prestige. A radical solution is to mandate tax payer funded research to be publish in one journal (like Plos One). Then we would be only able to judge research on merit.

This story has a happy ending. I know of many cases (including my own) where the paper was rejected after similar efforts. Hence if the paper was published in a "lower rung" journal, it might be deemed less important or substantial or not attract as much interest.

Blistering hot day for lab Christmas picnic to celebrate the year. But what amazing cooks my lab has, providing a very international menu. Also - farewell to Raj Moily after 6 years in the lab. Best of luck with your MBA in Sydney.

This study has found DNAJC7 truncation mutations are associated with / . DNAJC7 is a chaperone involved in protein folding homeostasis. The protein appears depleted in patients carrying the mutations.

Excellent insight and thoughts on grant statistics from my very own post-doc . Someone I can vouch is thoughtful and considered. A must read!

Agh. My most creative and potentially paradigm shifting project was 'd by today. But that won't stop me. I believe in this work and will push it forward and hopefully prove my naysayers wrong😆.

For anyone interested the photo was taken by Terry Mulhern (our teaching coordinator) after calling about whether I was in the correct theatre. I guess he wanted to record this historic event 😀

I finally gave a lecture to an empty room today! Maybe it's the 9 am Friday time, exhaustion from the mid-semester test yesterday, or my lecture style. Regardless, it is clear that the days of old-school lecturing are numbered in the era of recorded lectures.
