I showed this tweet to a Czech friend and, for unknown reasons, she said she will now create a Twitter account just to follow me ma'am, I said, my tweets are really not worth that trouble

Well, in South Slavica languages, it's "lav", more related to leo/leon than to aslan
-
I think you misunderstand me here. 'Slon' is the (I believe) universal Slavic word for 'elephant', despite coming from aslan, a word meaning 'lion'. Across the Slavic languages, the word for 'lion' however is, as you say, something like lev/lav, related to Latin leō

Slavic languages do have a cognate of "elephant", though! Unfortunately, it's their word for "camel".
-
Omg unbelievable: Czech velbloud, borrowed from Gothic ulbandus, from Greek ἐλέφας, Hamitic elu, Sanskrit ibhah. But look, in Old EN elpend (elpentoð) led to olfend (camel); Old DE olbenta; Norse ulfaldi. So if not for Latin camelus, EN would have also had elefant for camel:)

reminds me - the Korean and Japanese words for 'giraffe' come from this Chinese mythical beast that also... has four legs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin pic.twitter.com/nhZ26GXn0Y
-
There's an even weirder reason for this: apparently Zheng He's expedition to Africa brought giraffes back to China: "turns out that the Qilin look slightly different nowadays, but they still bring good luck; here, have a live one." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ming_treasure_voyages …pic.twitter.com/lu5pgfJqSH

Off topic, but it was kinda funny when I learned the lion in Chronicles of Narnia is just named "Lion".
-
You're not gonna believe how Disney named the protagonist in the Lion King!
