I'd argue it was never really lost if you go to small towns and reserves in the north, probably in the rural parts of countless poor countries, too. There can be friction everywhere, but I've witnessed some of the sweetest, most welcoming people who will laugh at you to no end ..

but will return kindness. I suspect that modern living puts up barriers that disable this kind of connection, even contact, from happening between people who are not already part of the same more or less wide group. I choose to (just want to) ignore those with divisive rhetoric.
