Doesn’t it bother the cryptocommunity that their decentralized platform still can’t practically be used in decentralized disaster scenarios? In a zombie apocalypse, bitcoin is usually less important than bread. Shouldn’t we plan for apocalypse? It’s 2017, and winter is coming

I generally think that bitcoin is great for when the internet works, not an appropriate tool if that's not the case. But there are projects working on bitcoin over satellite, short-wave radio, and SMS in case internet goes out.

Depending on the situation, you could either deal with the latency and sync up with Earth every so often, or just create a new cryptocurrency to use on the ship/ interstellar colony.

Yeah, so imagine the use case where around your friendly neighborhood star is a superhuman intelligence and a great bass player. How can we play jazz along with it, and also contribute something back, and outwards, of value to the universe?

That's a new situation for me, I'd have to be there myself to help solve that problem :)

Maybe the superhuman intelligence will accept cryptocurrency. Maybe they figured out abundance and zero marginal cost manufacturing and have no use for money, in which case music, joy, and compassion is a more appropriate offering of gratitude.
