This narrative is also shockingly ableist and privileged. Like the writer has never had to deal with the realities of chronic illness, disability, or structural poverty. The danger spoken of was never real, so it’s fine to ignore, “better” even by the writers account.

The part about still having skills ignores disability & edu access entirely. Also the pulling on network for support. What if all your friends aren’t in the upper strata of society? As advice: All this theory works in his life only because others suffer in ways he dismisses.

maybe it is privileged, but i don't think it's essentially wrong. history is replete with examples of people from terribly diminished circumstance rising against the oppression of their situations, & today we are largely extremely comfortable and empowered by historical standards

Your and my class is certainly. A great many people are not in that situation. We know those historical examples because they are outliers, and in some cases because that is a propaganda narrative which helped the leader be seen as on the side of oppressed masses.

when marcus aurelius wrote meditations, he was writing to himself! obviously not everyone is going to be roman emperor, but there are lessons that can be applied. the palladium piece is for ambitious people, and for they i maintain it’s still of interest, even with limitations
