Could underground cavities be used for storage on a grid scale production? How would the increased atmospheric pressure affect efficiency and viability from a cost perspective? For example, could abandoned o&g wells be used to create massive underground batteries?

If the well and 2 reservoirs were set up as a closed loop, a simple ballasting system could move liquids between the two. Could manipulating underground pressure store enough potential to be cost effective?
