If he really believes this, why apply for patents at all? Why not just publish findings in a way that made the prior art obvious. It looks like Tesla owns quite a lot of patents that Tesla has pinkie-sworn not to enforce:https://www.tesla.com/legal/additional-resources#patent-pledge …

The circumstances that Tesla can go back on this "Pledge" are very broad if you read the fine print. Looks to me like some really successful PR.

Actions counter to the spirit of Musk's video message: - Applying for patents. - Wording the pledge so there are many ways for future Tesla to enforce their patents. Musk is not known for choosing the orthodox when it interferes with his mission. He has other options.
