Considering that I don't see a scientific way that such an effect could occur — unclean DC would affect the semiconductor elements in a linear fashion — I'll have to leave the conversation here as we're definitely straying into audiophile pseudoscience, which I can't support.

lol, you haven’t heard it! that’s pseudoscientific. it’s just mainly two things, electrical noise which the dac has to filter / reject, which it can’t do perfectly, and jitter, which effects time domain stuff, on the usb. pretty widely reported, incl the designer of the dac

You've studied physics, you're a scientist. You should know better, you probably do know better. If you're actually not trolling, please educate yourself, study the science behind it (the real science, not audiophile BS), measure it, repeatedly, and don't trust your own ears.

i used to come from that direction in thinking about sound, but found to my surprise that things like e.g. good, balanced cables, optical connections on a DAC, 24 bit audio etc made a noticeable impact. not trusting your ears is… counter to how to do music/mastering imho.

Psychological effects will surpass any actual differences above a certain price point, and the tech you're describing is far beyond that point. That's why trusting your ears is wrong, your mind will try to justify any purchase you made. It's like an addiction.

As long as you're in the analog domain, many changes do make sense, but for digital cables, as long as data isn't dropped so much that it cuts out, and as long as you avoid ground loops and the worst of DC noise, you can't cause any trouble whatsoever.

I've used my audio interfaces, powered via USB, recording at high enough amplification that my heartbeat at half a meter distance would cause clipping issues (!) and yet still didn't get any measurable or noticeable noise.

your audio interface and microphone system didn’t have any measurable noise with the amplification cranked like that? i feel like i can’t be understanding you correctly. noise is a property of every physical system, and for every mic/interface i’ve seen, noise is audible if amped

Yes, exactly. The further you amplify, the worse the noise. And even with a 15$ chinese aliexpress powered USB hub the DC was clean enough that at +70dB amplification no measurable noise at all was generated (!).

In my experience, the USB ports of all my devices have produced extremely clean DC, as far as I could measure it this far. In fact, for recording beyond +70dB amp I'll usually plug straight into the motherboard instead of the usb hub as it's just the tiniest bit cleaner.

If it's that noticeable, there's either a real measurable defect occuring, which you should measure, trace, and try to get it repaired as it will impact digital busses as well, or it's a psychoacoustic effect.
