offshore wind farms could also be made to draw up nutrients from the lower levels and produce orders of magnitude more oceanic carbon drawdown. i bet this could be an extremely economical way to do it, and could also boost whale and other marine life populations https://twitter.com/MassCEC/status/1446551456522412033 …

t̶h̶e̶ ̶l̶i̶m̶i̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶c̶t̶o̶r̶ algae, which turn carbon into food, and sequester some, need nutrients to grow, these are available in lower levels of the ocean. stir it up with a small amount of power, which is available nearly every night when there's overproduction

isn't the excess nutrients primarily past the steep part of the thermal incline (i.e. sub 500m depth)?

i think that’s right. most offshore wind farms are on a shelf if i’m not mistaken

So essentially wind turbines on the ~60m depth shelf and a nearby pump station running pipe from below 500m to bring up deep ocean nutrients?

well I think it mainly is nutrients on the seafloor, less than < 500 m particularly, but in some cases if it was particularly advantaged i guess you could pump it through pipes

I wonder if you could make the economics better by pairing the surface enrichment with some sort of aquaculture farm...

probably you will attract a lot of wild marine life, so it makes sense to protect spawning grounds nearby. i hesitate about any farming where there are additives, but it could work at low density. it’s important to be ecologically sensitive

I had a conversation with a sustainable trout farmer at the farmers market awhile back... he said the hardest part about doing it without all the nastiness that you see in big commercial aquafarms is finding a sustainable source of nutrients to feed the base of the food cycle.
