I wonder if typically the company taking over a word (Kleenex, Xerox, etc) are dominant for a much longer time.

When a brand becomes a generic word, its identity becomes part of the common lexicon. And is in danger of being misappropriated and hijacked by all its competitors (to promote themselves).
