turns out my mom deliberately keeps most social engagements down to 2 hours, max
my brother doesnt need this strategy but avoids parties or gatherings where he's expected to interact with more than 6 people2 replies 0 retweets 25 likesShow this thread -
re: sensory sensitivities my mom has hyperacute hearing but no real sensory issues apart from finding tags and wool extremely itchy, to the point that when she was a kid in Italy being forced to wear wool all the time, she'd stuff tissues in her armpits to reduce the itching

my brother has 0 sensory issues (apart from hating cooked onions) he describes himself as always focused on his immediate needs, nothing else is a matter of concern apparently it takes great effort to notice anything outside of whatever he happens to be focused on

also, neither of them are generally particularly tired (brother suggested i get looked at for CFS, although apparently he's fueled by half his body weight in coffee)

so now i understand why they're not particularly interested in (and likely wouldn't qualify for?) an autism diagnosis-- it's easy for them to modify their lifestyles to suit any mild sensory issues and to meet their social needs without exhausting themselves

i think they also tend to be a lot more blunt and disagreeable than i am definitely a couple of tips i can pull from this, even if i'll have difficulty implementing them

you can always turn the assist down or off for more exercise or range, but it completely changes the sort of… psychological activation energy / accessible “neighborhood landscape” in my brain w/ citibike, feels like all manhattan (& parts of brooklyn) is my hood
