the medical treatments and housing available in the 1950s are super cheap right now, the expensive stuff you can get now was just not available in 1950

i mean, my first experience with the american medical system was a $4k one mile ride in an ambulance for a dislocated kneecap, so i’m not so sure that’s true:

I don't know the specifics of your situation - but I'd be willing to bet that all kinds of tech was used that were not available in 1950. (whether much or any of it was medically necessary is a different question)

no, nothing like that. ultra sound and a splint. the charges were because of price of opacity, the charges were sprung on an unsuspecting ‘customer’ after the fact, and insurance that wouldn’t pay. the actual medicine was $2k, and relatively simple. anti inflammatories

ultrasound wasn't widely available for clinical use until the mid 60s and if you paid $2K for anti-inflammatories they also weren't available in the 1950s

i didn’t pay $2k for anti inflammatories dude, i paid $2k for a doctor looking at me for 15 minutes in a hospital and a splint, and $4k for a 5m ambulence ride. you seem to be really resistant to the idea that people could be overpaying for medicine in the usa. you do!

you seem to think that a la cart pricing reflects what the actual prices of all those things are. medicine in the states is messed up in all kinds of ways, a lot of it has to do with (over) using all kinds of the latest tech for no good reason

for sure, it’s messed up in multiple ways, and maybe unnecessary treatment represents the bulk of the spend, but even simple / routine stuff has inflated dramatically.

I agree, there is a ton of disagreement about causes. the argument I personally find most convincing is that is subsiding a lot more expensive treatments that are under-reimbursed.

i think this is a just so argument but you can burst that bubble pretty wide by looking at the absolute size and employment in health insurance, and hospital administrator / president salaries, & doctor salaries / malpractice premiums. enormous bloat compared to single payer sys
