Are they really that close? Cochlear implants are upwards of $20k iirc, and definitely pretty different technologically.

Cochlear implants are definitely totally different! I'm talking about a cheaper device you wear in your ear, to help gradual / not complete hearing loss or when implant surgery is not indicated

even if you have good hearing, a good microphone and compression / eq'ing can often help give you superhuman hearing, picking up conversations in noisy spaces or when farther away.
