Two related things I'm thinking about as I cover AI on http://doxa.substack.com : 1. Just how much ML is already baked into our lives via browsing, shopping, searching. 2. The idea that these nominally silo'd ML algos may be silently coupling in weird ways. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1404595039318183939 …

We could accidentally build a harmful /federated/ AI that consists of a bunch of different, dumber and modular ML algos in various silos of entertainment & commerce, that are communicating & coupling into a larger system with a kind of unity to it. Maybe we already have.

I've talked to a number of people who work on AI alignment this year, & I've not once heard anyone reference the idea I just floated in this thread, i.e. that disparate MLs may be coupling & syncing & federating. I think it's totally off the AI ex-risk nerd radar.

Yeah that's a don't-speak-it's-name/don't-give-anyone-ideas kinda thing, have discussed exactly that scenario with a bunch of people

If you've got a selfimproover that already knows how to send/receive signals with its counterparts for market coordination purposes that's when things get very fun
