idk, the problem is like, 3-6 orders of magnitude bigger than people want to deal with mentally, and giant engineering projects fail all the time, civilizations fall. if the first outpost on mars doesn’t turn into roanoke 2.0 it will be a miracle
you assume we ultimately get there. civilization can fall a long way, without nukes, bioweapons for climate change. and actually getting a sustainable civilization on mars is insanely difficult

Agreed, tho I think: 1. Everyone everywhere won’t die before “meaningful” space colonization 2. Any setbacks of negative or no tech growth won’t be permanent 3. So we’ll one day have the tech to build civilizations off Earth 4. We won’t globally coordinate to stop this forever

So off-world colonies are (very likely) a matter of when, not if. Overcoming a wildly different atmosphere, soil fertility, gravitational force etc. will as you said be extremely hard, but not impossible, and (to me) much more likely than extinction.
