i should be smarter than to argue with bitcoin maximalists about the energy intensity of bitcoin, but seriously, technologists, the industry has a problem with energy usage *even at this scale*. if it 'actually' scaled to replace everything it would be catastrophic.

claim: energy usage doesn't scale with transaction rate. they're right! -- because transaction rate *doesn't scale* block size of 1 MB & creation time of 10min, ~3 - 7 transactions a sec limited supply of transactions, balanced by fees

transaction rate is, in fact, irrelevant proof of waste secures the value of the ledger, block rewards and transaction fees incentivize miners to do so btc keeps blocks small to make running a full node affordable scaling at the second layer is tractable

how can transaction rate be irrelevant for a cryptocurrency? transacting and hodling is all you do. sure, a future to be specified second layer network like lightning *could* solve some of these problems -- move as much off the base blockchain as possible -- why do it at all?

because proof of waste doesn't "power transactions" it secures the value of the ledger let's say a fork which 4xed the number of transactions in a block won, and had the same value as btc does now, is bitcoin more energy efficient? of course not

lightning isn't some future thing, it exists right now and it works moving btc around inside say coinbase or cashapp is also off chain, should those all count as "lowering btc energy use"? of course not
