i should be smarter than to argue with bitcoin maximalists about the energy intensity of bitcoin, but seriously, technologists, the industry has a problem with energy usage *even at this scale*. if it 'actually' scaled to replace everything it would be catastrophic.

because proof of waste doesn't "power transactions" it secures the value of the ledger let's say a fork which 4xed the number of transactions in a block won, and had the same value as btc does now, is bitcoin more energy efficient? of course not

lightning isn't some future thing, it exists right now and it works moving btc around inside say coinbase or cashapp is also off chain, should those all count as "lowering btc energy use"? of course not

Each Lightning Network channel represents funds under mutual custody of two participants via a cryptographic contract protocol. A payment in a channel updates the payout amounts from the contract to each party. The base layer is used in channel setup and settlement.
