Ages ago I read a thing about how the cars, planes and so on of the future were all going to be powered by compressed air. The article said it was better than batteries because refuelling was much quicker. Wonder why it didn't pan out

I don't think I've heard more about compressed-air-powered transportation in the last five years than I would have if I'd dreamt this rather than actually reading about it

no one had a practical plan for air (too low energy density) but the biggest reason is lithium ion batteries came down in cost by 10x in a decade, and up in lifetime by a similar high factor. you start at low eff 20-30% and with some ideas can increase it >50%, maybe even 60%...

so it might compete as a mature technology in maybe cost or refueling speed but as electric cars become mature, hard to compete directly
