Remember that the Nazis had the support of academics, intellectuals, 'intelligent people', scientists and your reasonable next-door neighbour.

they... didn’t have the support of the academics/intellectuals/scientists! there was a massive diaspora chased out of germany, and intellectuals were persecuted

The idea that 'intelligent' and educated people wouldn't have supported the Nazis (if that's what you're inferring) is ludicrous.

there was a massive exodus of scientists, intellectuals, and academic, in nazi germany, before the takeover and before and during the purges. it’s recorded historical fact. yes, there were some who continued. but academic science in nazi germany was nearly dead

intellectuals as a class basically rejected the nazi regime, and hitler knew it, that’s one reason there was so much persecution
