A regional train line is functionally a 3-7 lane highway with onramps every 3 miles that you have to walk to (or build giant parking structures) doing ~40 MPH. It sort of works in Europe because they're built for it. We're not.

Most critically, if you can't get literally a highway ridership numbers, the headways go to the moon and then it's not "mass" transit.
