I’m a selfish collectivist. I don’t currently receive direct assistance from any welfare state, but the world I live in will be much better if people in need have a safety net. And someday, I may need it too.

You can pretend to insulate yourself from hardship by amassing power and harming others, but you’ll spend your life anxiously building a dreamworld for yourself in the middle of a real world you helped destroy. Or you can simply help build a world without hardship. You benefit.

In the current paradigm, this means I pay more taxes. Seems like a raw deal, but wait— What is the expected value of more money in my pocket when all my basic needs are covered vs the peace of mind knowing that I’ll never have to choose b/w paying medical bills or paying rent?

One recent study found that *perceived* economic insecurity is more detrimental to mental health than actual, realized risk. Even the currently employed (and especially men) experience economic insecurity as a significant negative factor on mental health.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352827318300594 …

So even if I spend my entire life with stable income, the looming threat of joblessness & the hardship it implies has a real impact on my life. It erodes my mental health, a d it forces me to live in a society in which the pernicious effects of *realized* hardship are omnipresent

It means I live in a society in which I am more likely to lose my life or that of a loved one to murder or suicide. Or where we don’t have the basic public goods to respond to a pandemic. And obviously no amount of private money can truly evade the impact of climate change.

Bottom line: You don’t have to be a bleeding heart altruist for collective action and investment in public goods to make sense. You just have to prefer living in a decent functioning society to one that’s perpetually collapsing around you.pic.twitter.com/jgI2XmeaUG
