Golumbia has declined to elaborate, so can someone else unpack the logic of calling this tweet "fascist"? (This isn't a dunk, btw. I'm actually curious about the argument, here.) https://twitter.com/dgolumbia/status/1368216328071503874 …

Part of my curiosity stems from the fact that some of the completely gonzo "anti-extremist" stuff Golumbia puts out ends up in certain parts of The Discourse. He has his finger on a kind of lefty anti-disinfo/extremism pulse & is early with early w/ some types of crankery.

For instance, this article is basically a concentrated, fermented version of the Cade Metz anti-rationalist smear piece in the NYT. I'm sure we'll see something closer to this in the NYT, soon.https://davidgolumbia.medium.com/the-great-white-robot-god-bea8e23943da …

Here is my feeling on him & on scholars like him: there is some work that is important to have out there on the fringes. So that some sane manifestation of it can filter back into The Discourse, having been processed & decrazified.https://twitter.com/boazhsan/status/1368225500695461888 …

Unfortunately that filtration process has broken down, & major outlets (plus social media) are mainlining the hard stuff. Just shooting the most out-there, unreasonable takes directly into the veins of The Discourse.

So yeah, I think in normal times it is good to have fringe scholars with really elaborate and mostly wrong theories running around, shaking things up. But in 2021 there is a mass market for the most extreme stuff, so the most extreme stuff is what we get.

This is also basically my take on CRT and critical theories in general. It was a wonderful, vital part of the the discursive ecosystem, up until it /became/ the discursive ecosystem everywhere from academia to media to corporate HR. And now we're screwed.

So going back to the OT, what is the precise chain of reasoning behind calling that tweet "fascist"? Because whatever it is we will likely be seeing more of it.

Also, to the actual substance of the LeCun tweet, I do not think much of it. This is some Computer Guy philosophizing of the type I am personally allergic to. But we used to be able to disagree on the merits w/out calling the other party "fascist."
