If the analyses are not ready to be shared as a preprint, they should not be circulated as a press release either. At the very least, the putative recombinant genome should have been submitted to GISAID as an assembly, so that others can evaluate the claim.

I agree that publishing an exclusive in the press without a preprint is a crappy publication strategy
