Neither. It's all about the maintenance of each individual aircraft and not the design itself. You can have a flawlessly designed aircraft that shouldn't ever fail but is poorly maintained, and you can have a somewhat crappy build of an aircraft that is meticulously maintained.

An aircraft with twin engines can fly on just one engine just fine. That's how they're designed. If one engine blows then you land as quickly as possible on your remaining. Now if it's the fuel pumps that stopped working then if you had battery backup for the hydraulics you sh/

/uld still be able to land the aircraft. Backup systems for the backup systems is how modern aircraft are designed. Personally I would prefer a network of all-electric buses and cruise slowly across the country and visit more places.
