all of the numbers are terrible, some kind of conservation law with proof of work, everything requires electricity and sometimes special hardware. if only there were some other resource that’s scarce but less expensive / distributed. some say storage

Proof of stake which replaces the tedious (energy consuming) part of block chains with ‘stakes’/trust. It’s still distributed just based on votes of trust. Last I checked.

Solar-powered 15min increments of mining. Start at 9a approx and stop at 3p approx. Clouds show up then don't mine for 15min and recharge batteries. Get used mining equipment and run it liquid-cooled. Not sure what the numbers are now with the current difficulty

There are "proof of space-time" coins - in which the value of the "coin" comes from proof of storage space occupied for enough time. One coming from Bram Cohen (of BitTorrent fame) whose name escapes me, and one called SpaceMesh.
