if you run renewables on an island or like you’re on an island, like Texas, you need a lot of energy storage or backup generation. it might be better for the USA to invest in a superconducting electricity backbone doesn’t that sound American? world’s best energy market

apparently there are natural gas plant outages. I don’t know what’s wrong, basically I guess they just froze up? or operations are too difficult to staff because of the roads?

Seems like transport of fuel is a problem when they don’t have infrastructure to clear roads.https://twitter.com/JesseJenkins/status/1361348544154664961 …

JesseJenkins @JesseJenkinsConfidential info from a market participant in ERCOT: As of ~10 AM Eastern time, the system has ~30 GW of capacity offline, ~26 GW of thermal -- mostly natural gas which cant get fuel deliveries which are being priorities for heating loads -- and ~4 GW of wind due to icing. https://twitter.com/JesseJenkins/status/1361308086150049792 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Combine that with inefficient housing WRT to energy/insulation and a spot pricing market which allows for producers to not need to prepare for rare events by hedging.
