isn’t the recent evidence of another infection spike in manaus and the E484K / B135 south african variant not triggering an immune response from previously infected patients in the astra zeneca study evidence?https://twitter.com/latimes/status/1359603615514656775 …

There is currently no evidence to suggest that new variants make herd immunity harder to achieve, said Chunhuei Chi, director of the Center for Global Health at Oregon State University. But, he said, the variants highlight the need for mass vaccinations. https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2021-02-10/why-scientists-are-not-panicking-about-new-coronavirus-variants … pic.twitter.com/jovUynIxOT

He's just wrong. Herd immunity threshold rises with rising Rt. Variants with R factor half again higher are well established.

I'd say the claim was there's no peer reviewed paper, so we don't really have good enough scientific evidence, but that would be idiotic and misleading.https://twitter.com/davidmanheim/status/1359561515460927491 …

There are factual claims that, communicated poorly, are damaging. A clear example was CDC saying that "there is no peer reviewed evidence that supports widespread use of masks to prevent COVID." It was true, but very, very misleading.

epistemically robust communication is really hard, but I don’t see why it’s justifiable to say something that’s factually untrue because it’s easier to say

Scientists and journalists do: overly cautious in their statements to not be wrong. Scientists and journalists SHOULD DO: overly push for the precautionary principle to stop flights, spread, and upgrade non-pharmaceutical interventions and quickly reach #ZeroCovid together.
