i was waiting for someone else to comment on this, but the variant they’ve detected in the SF Bay Area, California, is called L452R. this is the first variant I’ve had such an easy time remembering, because it’s name is nearly ‘LASER’ in 1337speek)
there are some pretty interesting graphs showing how that one took over. they did a lot of early tests on it in Texas.

I am not sure how dangerous this one is. A single mutation in spike is unlikely to bypass the vaccine too much, but E484K seems to weaken prior immunity significantly. 8 months between infections is a long time for a coronavirus so maybe just waning immunity?

i’m not sure if it’s just one mutation but this one in particular is shared a lot, but it seems like circumstantial evidence that it’s been more contagious if it’s making up 50% of LA samples
