it seems to me the long form blogs from the lesswrong/rationalist crowd are slightly ahead (by a couple weeks) of twitter in assessing the actual scale or the calamity posed by the new variants and sluggish vaccine roll out, maybe because twitter was distracted by politics & 1/6

On a personal level I have assessed my procedures, no need to change anything. I haven't changed them since April. I had some impact beyond that, which is nice, but having to watch everyone else run into this is disappointing.

My sister works in a nursing home, she has been working with a FFP-2(N95) since June after I pestered her about it and supplied her fitting masks. Her employer interviewed her about her experience and then decided to make them mandatory in December, supplying everyone.

wow, that's a huge win! since double masking is a thing that helps, i wonder what company is going to come up with mask sleeves can conform even better to the face and are fashionable and comfortable, out of some material like silk, or something washable

@Trinitydraco1@djbaskin @WearAtoms I know you guys are working on masks, what about mask sleeves for the better quality masks.@DrEricDing points out that the fact by which the KN95 masks (for example) are better is a way better weapon against the new Covid variants.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

I am not sure what you mean by mask sleeves, I assume you mean some kind of additional filter, but this is definitely a nuanced discussion which Twitter lends itself to poorly. I am also not familiar with Dr. Ding so forgive me.

N95 masks were always the best mask option but speaking personally it can still be handled on a risk adjusted basis. For example our Atoms masks filter out 84% of particles above 0.3 microns. For myself who is relatively young and in perfect health, that should be fine.

My parents should be fine with the mask ask well but as B117 has shown, it may be time to reevaluate those risks and maybe they stop wearing reusable masks and upgrade to get some additional protection.

I don't think we all need to switch to N95 masks, that would be the safest thing to do in an ideal world but we still don't have the supply chain infrastructure globally to have 7 billion people buy those. One thing I would like to see other brands do is get their masks tested.

We did that at Atoms for that very reason. Some reusable masks offer almost zero protection and while something is better than nothing for most brands, it should be left to the customer to decide their risk level compared to N95s as the gold standard. My two cents.

double masking gives some level of additional protection. my idea for a mask sleeve is basically a mask that is specifically designed to be compatible with kn95 mask form factors

Has there been any research to actual prove double masking actually works? It makes sense in theory now that I understand what you mean by mask sleeve but I haven't seen anything to show that double masking has a statistically significant increase in protection.

good question i haven’t seen any aerosol studies on this tracking e.g. shadowgraphy but there are a lot of setups.
