it seems to me the long form blogs from the lesswrong/rationalist crowd are slightly ahead (by a couple weeks) of twitter in assessing the actual scale or the calamity posed by the new variants and sluggish vaccine roll out, maybe because twitter was distracted by politics & 1/6

On a personal level I have assessed my procedures, no need to change anything. I haven't changed them since April. I had some impact beyond that, which is nice, but having to watch everyone else run into this is disappointing.

My sister works in a nursing home, she has been working with a FFP-2(N95) since June after I pestered her about it and supplied her fitting masks. Her employer interviewed her about her experience and then decided to make them mandatory in December, supplying everyone.

wow, that's a huge win! since double masking is a thing that helps, i wonder what company is going to come up with mask sleeves can conform even better to the face and are fashionable and comfortable, out of some material like silk, or something washable

A silikon sleeve that fits over the edges of the now probably most common KN95 type would be nice. I've dabbled with that since last spring but it's difficult to cast. N99/N100 commonly have gaskets made from TPE/Silicone or some kind of foam(if non-reusable).

I don't double mask, however. I have good, certified masks that fit and filter well. They're really easy to get now, and cheap, too.

I have several P-3, FFP-3, FFP-2. The foldable Chinese KN95 are by far my favorite type for source protection. I have a batch of larger ones made in spring (they don't fit smaller faces) with very low breathing resistance. I have been wearing them when around my parents.

(I do their groceries, which is quite taxing, but they underestimate how easy it is to get infected so I prefer to cut down on their exposure potential)
