it seems to me the long form blogs from the lesswrong/rationalist crowd are slightly ahead (by a couple weeks) of twitter in assessing the actual scale or the calamity posed by the new variants and sluggish vaccine roll out, maybe because twitter was distracted by politics & 1/6

but i think the issue is that people haven't worked out how to be radically honest about what they are doing in this age of media. it is like the addition of tv and twitter to the office consciousness means people can't be honest about states of uncertainty, esp. around bad news

I was supporting remotely but I made the decision to work for him before I was zoomed into the campaign life. I think I generally got the earlier sense that in a country of extremes, moderation would be more unifying. It only became more obvious after the pandemic hit though.
