my main problem with it is latency making it pretty bad for music. but quality suffers too

you could make a headphone that is itself a phone, running android or something, and link to your regular phone over a data connection

LTE is way faster than Bluetooth. Putting the the DSP/DAC in the headphones = wired headphones :) I have seen at least one android based headphones... with touch screen on one side :p Vivaldi, or something like that. Also donno if android audio latency has gotten better.

Packetized audio is always a bit tricky, especially on wireless connections that miss or error packets.

Also I think the non-standard wireless things have way more bandwidth to work with. Even the standard Bluetooth codec SBC sounds decent if you give it 600-800kbit/second. Uncompressed CD audio is about 1400 kbit/second. Bluetooth is ~1000-2000 kbit max?
