For what it's worth I think the actual correct answer here is mutation, as it is as far as I can tell, pretty unbounded in terms of how bad that could be.

I don't think so. As we can tell so far, the virus ability to mutate is still manageable by the vaccine, means, the vaccine still seems to work despite the virus mutation. The real flu on the other hand can mutate in many more ways so vaccines are not as effective for mutated v.
