could the State run a public square better than twitter? no. could _a_ state do so? maybe.

You certainly see it with individuals. If a person becomes "indefensible", then attempting to defend that person also makes you indefensible. But now it's forbidden to have any connection at all with the unperson, and you must actively denounce the person if there's any doubt.

The point is to completely isolate a person (or website) and settle for nothing short of complete capitulation or destruction. In the end, it's about the acquisition and demonstration of power. But it's power exercised through a web, not a hierarchy.
