imagining if mining bitcoin kept the software powering slack up the workflow at slack powered tech startups would have kicked off today. instead it just went down. imaginably someone's already though of a coin where your proof of work is sustaining like an AWS instance, ?

maybe so, it’s a technical challenge, it might require restricting the programs too much, much like functional programming does (and can be restrictive). you’d probably have to have many instances cloned just to verify, it might not be competitive

on the other hand "coin given out where the proof of work is operating a log latency irc server" doesn't sound so hard to implement. it's totally different if you're talking about all the features in the e.g. microsoft teams stack

At the very least you have unknown third parties with access to your server programs and chat messages and potentially also some privileged access to your infrastructure.

yes, it's a completely distinct challenge to actually provide privacy / end to end encryption while still making it convenient
