imagining if mining bitcoin kept the software powering slack up the workflow at slack powered tech startups would have kicked off today. instead it just went down. imaginably someone's already though of a coin where your proof of work is sustaining like an AWS instance, ?

i know ethereum is supposed to do some distributed computation but in practice the language is more limited?

The biggest project in the space doing something along these lines is @Filecoin. Decentralized storage. Very ambitious, they want to be the main network that hosts decentralized apps. I'm keeping a very close eye on them, especially since there's not much hype around them yet.

There is Filecoin & Storj for file storage & retrieval ... haven't seen anything to incentivize computation though ...

maybe so, it’s a technical challenge, it might require restricting the programs too much, much like functional programming does (and can be restrictive). you’d probably have to have many instances cloned just to verify, it might not be competitive

Yeah, eth is like this in theory, but in practice, you can only run computationally non-intensive programs, so nothing like what you're thinking. I do remember some projects trying to do "proof of compute", ( http://golem.network ?), but so far, non of them had traction.

However, you could conceivably do proof of compute with zero-knowledge proofs. But once again, the type of compute that you can do is pretty limited.

You could build this, definitely. It would need to have a two layer setup and good cryptography.
