A tradition of knowledge is a body of knowledge that has been consecutively and successfully worked on my multiple generations of scholars or practitioners. Meaning: philosophical schools, ritual traditions in religion, or a craftsman’s unique trade. 2/n

In the modern day, we could include the tacit knowledge of how a codebase really works that senior engineers teach to junior engineers Or, perhaps a unique investing philosophy at a financial firm. Many creative traditions of knowledge go into producing each Hollywood film. 3/n

the tacit knowledge of how a codebase works is quite often poorly retained even in originators. i think this is one of the secrets behind the success of refactoring, a software equivalent of centuries old Japanese temples, regularly rebuilt
