I'm not an epidemiologist, but trick or treating does seem like it would be no more unsafe than time spent in school. It's outside, not in massive groups, plus they're walking around.

spreads across different groups also, there's more and more evidence that school does spread the disease also, halloween parties are still going forth

Halloween parties are bad. I 100% agree with that.

Re schools, I haven't looked into this extensively, but if there were a strong effect of opening schools on transmission, you would expect that school-age kids would represent an increasing percentage of total cases after they were open.

In Toronto, at least, we're not seeing that.pic.twitter.com/XWzk49X3bS

🤷🏻♀️ Retweeted Gary Marcus
recently saw this study from what I understand, young kids avoid most of the symptoms of the virus but can have a very high viral load and it seems that they are just as effective at spreading the virushttps://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/1322254990103044102?s=20 …

I'm obviously no better at eyeballing a significant difference than anyone else, but it's hard to imagine that the effect on elementary school kids is meaningful. (Obvi, I haven't read the study yet, so could well be missing something.)

the collective goal should be eradication, and to do that we need to drive Rt below 1. it might be that despite this, the tradeoffs against elementary education are too great & we still want to do it, but it complicates contact tracing and increases spread. & imo school sucks

I think we are essentially in 100% agreement. I'm just saying that I doubt there would be much if any increase in transmission as a result of trick-or-treating. However, I think it might be the case that canceling that reduces house parties, in which case, yes, better to cancel.

Oh, and to be clearer: I agree we should be focusing on eradication.
